ServiceTitan Alternative for Trades That Outgrew It

ServiceTitan is powerful and priced per technician. For trades businesses tired of the contract and the bill, here is what owning your system looks like.

The short answer: if you use most of ServiceTitan across several locations, keep it. If you pay per technician for far more platform than your shop uses, the alternative is owning one system for calls, dispatch, pricebook and invoicing, with no per-tech bill.

ServiceTitan is the heavyweight of trades software. HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other trades use it to run calls, dispatch, pricebooks, memberships, and reporting at real scale. Nobody serious calls it a toy.

People search for a ServiceTitan alternative for a different reason than they leave a small app. It is rarely missing features. It is the cost, the contract, and the feeling of running a business inside a platform you will never own.

How ServiceTitan is priced

ServiceTitan does not publish its prices. It quotes per technician, usually on an annual contract, and many of the modules teams lean on are sold as add-ons. Independent reviews commonly estimate a few hundred dollars per technician per month before implementation, which itself can take months.

The structure matters more than the exact number. Per-technician pricing means your software bill grows every time you hire a tech, which is to say every time the business is doing well.

Where trades owners feel it

  • Every new technician adds to a bill that renews whether or not you used every module.
  • Annual contracts make it expensive to change your mind.
  • Configuration is deep but still theirs: your process bends to fit the platform's model.
  • Your call history, customers, and pricebook live on a system you rent, which makes leaving painful by design.

What owning it looks like instead

The alternative I build is one operating system the business owns outright. Calls and bookings, dispatch, the job, the pricebook, memberships, invoicing, and follow-up live in one place, shaped to how your shop actually runs. Adding a tech adds a login, not a line item.

It is the same method I used on my own company, a roughly 200-person logistics operation with crews and vehicles in the field every day. We rebuilt it into one system it owns: 16 departments, 14 live bases in production, 21 SaaS tools replaced, $0 ongoing license cost, and 25+ AI agents handling the repetitive work.

That last part matters for trades. Much of the office work ServiceTitan charges to manage, call notes, follow-up texts, membership renewals, chasing unpaid invoices, is exactly the work AI agents handle well once everything sits in one system.

When to keep ServiceTitan

If you run a large multi-location operation that uses most of the platform, has an in-house admin who lives in it, and is happy with the contract, ServiceTitan earns its price. Switching for the sake of it would be a mistake.

The case for owning is strongest for shops that pay for far more platform than they use, feel the per-tech bill every time they hire, or still run half the business in spreadsheets around it.

You pay for the whole platform. Your shop uses part of it.

  • Only ServiceTitan: Enterprise reporting, Multi-location rollups, Marketplace add-ons.
  • Both: Calls and booking, Dispatch, Pricebook, Memberships, Invoicing.
  • What a ZAM system also runs: Your exact workflow, Hiring and training, Fleet and equipment, AI on your own data, No per-tech bill.

Before your next renewal

  • Pull your last invoice and divide it by the number of techs.
  • List the modules you pay for and the ones the team actually opens.
  • Write down what still lives outside ServiceTitan: hiring, payroll prep, purchasing, fleet.
  • Check your renewal date, because that is the moment you have leverage.

If those numbers bother you, run our free SaaS teardown before the renewal lands. It shows the rented total next to what owning the same capability looks like.
